I’ve often contemplated what my children will be when they grow up.
And it is now upon me. My oldest, almost 17, will be a senior next year.
And he has absolutely no idea what he really wants to do with his life.
And I am unsure as to how I feel about that.
I’m sure it’s common, at his age, to not know what one wants to grow up to be.
He is going to college and for that I am thankful. However, I would prefer for him to have at least an idea of what he wants to do before he begins college. Through multiple conversations with my young man, I still have yet to know and it is quite clear that he is unsure himself.
With that said, one day I was thinking deeply about his future. He’s mentioned a few different occupations he’d be interested in, but it’s apparent he hasn’t made a choice. So, I continue to talk to him and hoping he is listening to me.
But, what I’d really like for him to do (yes me, his mom), is a service occupation. I want all of them to do something that gives back rather than just enriching their own financial life. Reward comes in all sorts of packages and money is not the end game. When we give of ourselves, we can accomplish so much more. This is something I want for my kids……for them to give back. Albeit it is not my decision what their future holds, I hope that they do something worthwhile with it. Each one of them has so much to give.
So, for my soon-to-be 17yo, I ask this: Please think about a career in which you can give back.
The world would be a much better place if everyone would think of others before thinking of themselves.
